What To Expect at Union Hill
"...All things should be done decently and in order." (I Corinthians 14:40) These are the words we read from the pen of the apostle Paul as he's trying to bring order back into a disorderly assembly. These words are as true for assemblies of the Lord's church today as when they were penned by Paul long ago. All things at Union Hill will follow the same decent and orderly pattern.
1). "Brethren, pray for us." (I Thess. 5:25) Prayer is a vital part of the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ. We are to thank God for His good blessings, but we also have a responsibility to pray for others. Announcements are made at the beginning and close of the hour, so that names and circumstances can be fresh on the prayer mind of the congregation.
2). "...let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name." (Hb. 13:15, cp. Eph. 5:19) After announcements are made, we begin to sing praises to the Lord in song. The whole congregation sings out with their voices to glorify God and build each other up. It is truly a blessing to be with so many people at Union Hill that love to sing out to the Lord.
3). "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them..." (Acts 20:7) With songs being sung, we now focus upon the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ in observing the Lord's Supper every Sunday. This supper is to remind the Christian of the loving sacrifice that was made until the Lord comes again.
Also, in Act 20:7, we see that Paul preached to the disciples that came together. After we have announced those that need prayers and prayed for them, after we have sung praises to the Lord, after we partake of the Lord's Supper, then we open the word of God together and hear a portion of the gospel.
Preaching at Union Hill is mostly expository in nature (taking a passage and learning many lessons which that passage deals with). The Bible is the launching point for all things said or done, especially in the preaching.
At the close of the lesson there is always an invitation given to anyone in the audience that needs prayers for strength, prayers for courage in life, or prayers for forgiveness for sins they have committed against God. This is also a time to call for those who have not yet confessed Christ as Lord and obeyed His gospel (Mark 16:16) to come and dedicate their lives in service to Him. This is what to expect at the services of Union Hill.
